Welcome to the Rhythm Locura website!
We are New York's premier LGBTQ Latin /Ballroom dance group!

We have been delighting audiences with our blend of Latin and ballroom dances- with a hint of sass and humor- at many events and venues. We have performed at most of the borough Gay Pridefests, Gay Life Expos, and various charity events.
While our personnel occasionally goes through changes, our love of dancing for our audiences doesn't.
Contact us to have RL perform for your organization's events, or join yourself!

ORIGINS

Rhythm Locura formed in September 2005, beginning aS a 3-month "Out Dancing"LGBT performance class.

Under the creative direction of Simone Assboeck, Rhythm Locura's diversity and unique dance style quickly attracted the attention of LGBT event organizers. The demand to perform, added to the enthusiasm of the former students helped create the ongoing performance group.

A partial list of our past performance venues include:

The SAGE Women's Party

/Brooklyn Pride

/Queens Pride

/NYC Pridefest

/Five Boro Dance competition

/ BAAD (Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance)

/ Queens Pride House

/ Atlantis Bar, Queens,NY

/ ARCS Valentines Charity Ball

/ GLBT Expo AT JAVITS CENTER

Statement from Rhythm Locura- January 2019:

Ever since RL was formed in 2005, we felt that we had a great group of non-professional dancers who were thrilled to not be hampered or limited by following traditional gendered roles in dance. We have performed at many venues, most ( but not all) queer-oriented.

We were part of a very small number of explicitly LGBTQ dance groups or performing artists. You can see by the fact that although we still have our gay venues, we feel we can be ourselves in many clubs, lounges and restaurants.

Today, it might even be argued that as LGBTQ persons, we have integrated into more areas of society (certainly in more urban areas such as NYC- perhaps not so much in more isolated communities). As such, RL would like to invite others to experience the freedom of leading and/or following to their fave dances.

Meaning what, exactly? We are still (and will continue to be ) a queer-friendly performance group, but are now expanding to " non-queer identified" people who want to learn and perform with an exciting concept of ANYONE leading or following, perhaps even within the same piece! In reality, we have always had one or two straight-identified "guests" occasionally helping us out in some performances, and it was (we think) great fun for them as well. Our repertoire has ranged from Swing to Merengue to Salsa to Hustle (we've even don a Tango fusion at one point).

Dance has always been about freedom, so why limit yourself to one role?

Rhythm Locura is currently on an extended hiatus, but looking to relaunch soon- stay tuned! And let us know if you're interested in being a part of the new phase of RL!
